Pumpkin Contest

Grade Four had a great time participating in lots of Halloween activities on Thursday. They did a costume parade, a pumpkin contest and participated in Stuff a Sock for a Sick Kid.

The class pumpkins were great! Room 10 was one of the winners in the pumpkin contest.

Thank you to all the parents who brought in treats yesterday.  The kids had a blast in their costumes:)  Hope everyone has fun trick or treating tonight!

Pumpkin Art

The grade fours have been studying “Light and Shadow” in their science unit. This week, they explored using their knowledge of light and shadows in their art. The students created realistic pumpkin drawings using pencil crayons to show where light would be hitting the pumpkin and where the shadow would appear. 

Math - using arrays to multiply

The students are learning how to use arrays to solve math problems involving multiplication.  Here are some examples of their work:

Upcoming events

Students will be dressing up for Halloween on Thursday, October 30 2014 and it is a short day ending at 1:30.  Halloween day is a PD day. Just a reminder, costumes should be school appropriate and not include masks and weapons.  Looking forward to a fun day of a pumpkin carving contest and costume parade.

Ms.Bly's class will also be going to the Elboya park after lunch of Thursday to celebrate achieving a class goal.  If their costume makes it difficult to play they can bring a change of clothes. 

Health: Mind up!

Tasha Belix a student parent and registered child psychologist came in over the last few days to discuss with the students around how their brain works.  They really enjoyed the inquiry into their minds!

Science: Light and Shadow

The grade 4's started a new unit in Science today about light and shadow.  Today we discussed what emits light and what reflects light.  We also discussed how to safely view the sun incase they wanted to watch the partial solar eclipse today.  Below are the beginnings of their collages:

Halloween stories

The grade 4 students are working on writing descriptive and suspenseful Halloween stories.  Today we went through a lesson on how to change nouns and adjectives into juicy words.  Here is the website if they would like to go over it at home: Spooky story writing

Classroom Dojo

Ms.Bly's class is using an app called classroom Dojo to help us guide our behaviour and work towards positive actions in the class.  If you are interested in checking up on the Dojo points a student and parent code was sent home today.  If you have any questions about this program please do not hesitate to contact Ms.Bly.

Items to remember

If you are able to, please bring in an empty shoebox or box of that size for a Science experiment.

The Science test, social project rubric and Ted Harrison art was sent home today from Ms.Bly's class.

Field trip forms went home for our trip to Fort Calgary on November 4th.  Please return them before October 30th or as soon as possible.

Math Lessons

The students are learning what multiplication means and different strategies for multiplying whole numbers.  Here is a great website through Learn Alberta that provides lessons on this topic and many others if they need extra practice at home. Math Live Lessons

HALLOWEEN GIVING!

Each class at Elboya will be putting together a Halloween stocking filled with candy to donate to kids at the children's hospital who are unable to trick or treat this year.  We are hoping each student can bring in a little bit of candy to contribute before October 30th! The candy must be individually wrapped and cannot contain nuts.

Traditions

Yesterday afternoon Marlene Yellow Horn, an Aboriginal specialist with the CBE, came in to tell her naming story.  The students learned about Blackfoot traditions, language and the importance of oral storytelling in the Aboriginal culture.  She will be lending the grade 4's novel sets and artifact kits on this topic over the next few months.

Photo Retake Day-Oct 23, 2014

Photo Retake Day is not far away! Below are a few pieces of information to keep in mind:

1. Please have your child take their proof envelope, from original photo day, to the photographer on retake day.
2. If you have lost the proof envelope, please send a handwritten note to request a retake including your choice of background color (blue, grey, purple, green or copper).
3. If your child was absent from school on original photo day or is new to the school please tell your child to have their photograph taken on retake day.

Pyjama Day and Homeroom Breakfast

Pajama Day and Homeroom Breakfast was a big success! Thank you so much to everyone for contributing food and beverages. You helped make our event a fun and happy one! 

Emily Carr Trees

Grade 4 has been studying influential Canadian Artists. I hope everyone had a chance to check out their works inspired by Ted Harrison. This past week, the students studied Emily Carr and her work. As well as learning about her life and influence on the Canadian art world and how her work helped to define a Canadian identity along side the Group of Seven, Grade 4 created their own pieces inspired by her work. 

Please take some time to look at the art displayed in the main hall across from the gym.

C'est l'Halloween

The students are learning a song in French to celebrate Halloween.  They were taught 3 strategies for understanding the song.

1. Look at the pictures

2. Look for words you already know

3. Think of English words that connect to the French words

Science: Waste in our World: Wrap-up

The students are wrapping up Waste in our World this week.  We will have a final test on Thursday.  The students are able to use their books during the test and have all the material they need to complete it.  

*They will also be doing a final project where they need to bring in 2 useless items from home where they will try to brainstorm what can be done with them instead of throwing them in the garbage.  This will begin tomorrow.

Settlers project

The grade four students have been studying what life was like for new settlers to Alberta.  In this task the students were given a free piece of land and an imaginary loan adding up to $10 000 and were asked to imagine what they would buy and sell to help build up their homestead if they were new farmers to Alberta.  They had to add and subtract from their loan any time they bought or sold items and they made a final representation of their homestead.
